Start Healing from Trauma: Take Care of Your Body First

After someone goes through trauma, like a tough call, a big loss, or a life-changing event, it can affect everything: your mind, your emotions, your spirit, and your body. That’s why real healing needs to take care of all those parts.
The good news? You don’t have to wait. One of the best ways to start healing is by helping your body feel safe and strong. When the body feels better, it becomes easier to work on the emotional and mental parts too.
Here are some simple steps to help your body start healing.
1. Move Your Body Every Day
Trauma can make your body feel stuck or frozen. Gentle movement helps release stress and makes you feel more in control. You don’t need to hit the gym; just a walk, a light stretch, or dancing to music in your kitchen can help.
Try this: Walk for 10 minutes a day. Move in a way that feels good, not like a workout, but like shaking off stress.
2. Cut Back on Alcohol and Caffeine
Caffeine (like in coffee or energy drinks) can make you feel anxious or jittery. Alcohol might numb the pain for a little while, but it messes with your sleep and mood later.
Try this: Switch to herbal tea or water with lemon. If you use alcohol to relax, try something else that calms you, like a warm bath or deep breathing.
3. Get Better Sleep
Your body and brain heal when you sleep. But trauma can make it hard to fall or stay asleep. Making small changes to your bedtime routine can help your body wind down.
Try this:
Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
Turn off screens at least 30 minutes before sleep.
Take a warm shower, do deep breathing, or use calming music.
4. Eat Whole, Healthy Foods
Your body needs good fuel to heal. That means eating real, whole foods—not just fast food or snacks.
Try this:
Eat more protein (like eggs, meat, beans, or tofu)
Add fruits and vegetables every day
Choose whole foods when you can (not too much sugar or processed stuff)
5. Support Your Body with Simple Tools
Some vitamins, herbs, and calming tools can help your body feel more balanced and safe. These are not magic fixes, but they can support your recovery.
Try this:
Magnesium (especially glycinate or citrate) for sleep and relaxation
Lemon balm for calming the nervous system
Epsom salt baths to get additional magnesium, restore and soothe muscles, and detox the body
Supplements like GoTrim® ACTS (see below) to support regulation of adrenaline, cortisol, and thyroid hormones
Healing after trauma takes time, and that’s okay. You don’t have to fix everything at once. Start by helping your body feel safer. Every small step you take sends your body a message: “You’re okay now. You’re not alone.”
Especially for our first responders and caregivers: You’ve spent so much time helping others. This is your reminder to take care of yourself, too. You deserve to heal.
