Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month. We know that healthy attachment between mother and baby sets a child up for success for the rest of their life and is equally beneficial for mom. This is why it is so important to focus on mom’s mental health in the postpartum period as much as her physical health and baby’s development. According to Postpartum Support International, 15-20% of mothers, including adoptive mothers, may experience postpartum depression and/or anxiety in the first year of the baby’s life. Symptoms to look out for include anger and irritability, near-constant sadness, lack of connection with the baby, upsetting thoughts, and feeling anxious or panicky. This is more than typical “baby blues”; these symptoms usually do not get better on their own after a few weeks.
It is so important for moms to have adequate physical, mental, and emotional support, particularly during the first few tender months. Partners can be uniquely equipped to help provide mom with this support by encouraging and assisting with physical self-care, providing reassurance, taking care of some household tasks and other children in the home without being asked, and looking out for any worsening symptoms or symptoms that don’t go away. Additional ideas for how to be supportive are below:
Make sure mom eats regularly and has plenty of water. This is especially important if mom is breastfeeding.
Help out with night wakings and feedings however you can, whether it’s washing pump parts and bottles, changing diapers, doing a bottle feeding if able, or refilling water.
Help mom have one-on-one time with her partner and with other children in the home.
Keep lines of communication open. Listen without judgment.
Read up on postpartum depression and anxiety.
Make sure mom gets outside daily if possible.
Reassure her that she is a good mom and these feelings will not last forever.
If mom or someone in mom’s life notices that she’s showing symptoms of postpartum depression or anxiety, please don’t wait for it to get better. Reach out for counseling support as soon as you can.
