End of Year Family Reflection

The end of the year invites us to reflect on what went well, what was challenging, and what we hope for in the year ahead. While this can be a meaningful exercise individually, it often becomes even more powerful when done as a family. As we close out 2025, we invite you to sit down together and pause, reflecting with an intentional focus on connection and gratitude. Here are a few ideas to help guide your conversation.

Invite everyone’s input. You might be surprised by what your children remember most about the year. Even preschoolers can participate, though they may need a bit more prompting. School-age children can usually share their favorite moments, what made them laugh, and what felt hardest. Inviting these reflections shows children that their experiences matter and helps them build emotional awareness.

Reconnect with your values. Consider what matters most to your family, and reflect on how those values showed up throughout the year. This might include gratitude, quality time, responsibility, fun and creativity, or spiritual practices. Naming these together helps children understand not just what your family does, but why it matters.

Write down questions ahead of time. Cut them into strips and place them in a jar or bowl, then take turns reading and answering them together. Questions might include:

Who brought you the biggest smile this year?

What is something you learned?

What are you most proud of?

What habit would you like to start?

What habit would you like to leave behind?

What was most challenging?

What is a new food you tried and liked?

When did you feel most loved?

Who is a new friend you made?

What is something you’ve been wondering about?

What is your favorite thing we did as a family?

Set your focus for the year ahead. Using what comes up in your reflections, choose one or two shared family intentions for the coming year. This might look like less screen time to prioritize connection, slower mornings, or calmer bedtime routines. Let your values guide these goals.

Family reflection doesn’t need to be formal. It can happen over dinner, or you might turn it into a special evening with snacks and dessert. Reflecting together helps everyone feel part of something bigger than themselves. As you look ahead, you can enter the new year with a renewed sense of connection, groundedness, and love.
