Stress and Lifestyle

Did you know the impact of stress to our body is intertwined with our genetics? We now know some tolerate stress better than others partially due to their genes. We used to think that it was how one was raised, which led to poor coping skills. We now know there is something deeper that influences how stress impacts the body—both genetics and environment. Certain genes impact our stress level and how the body tolerates it. Furthermore, we can help turn up and down the effects of our own genes by our lifestyle. Our lifestyle includes nutrition, sleep, stress management, exercise, and toxins we absorb. In the end our lifestyle and our life events are what impacts our stress level.

How does one evaluate stress? We can evaluate by looking at the body as a “stress thermometer.” What specifically is pushing the stress level up? Do we have a gene that may be misbehaving? What does our lifestyle look like? Some areas of lifestyle to consider are sleep quality, food quality, exercise, relaxation, toxin intake, and managing stress.

Understanding how our body is impacted by stress can help us make better day-to-day choices. When we make better day-to-day choices, we may have a better chance of handling stress. Therefore, we would have an easier time regulating emotion, sleep, and relaxation, which can all impact healthy aging.
