How to Engage with Teenagers

When trying to communicate with our teens, sometimes it can be hard to engage them in conversation. Learning how to engage with them often requires the parent or person to keep up with their interests, hobbies, and even what has been happening in social media over time. Some adults look at the adolescent years as a time where we can utilize confrontation, where, after a while, that approach no longer works with them. When talking with our teenagers, we want to work with them, not against them.

To open up conversation with a teenager, try to form a question in a non-direct sort of way. One way to do this is to try "I wonder" statements. For example, "I wonder how school is going?" may get more of an explanation than "How was school today?". Teenagers just want to be heard, and one way you can fulfill that is to simply listen to them and make space for them to speak their mind. Setting aside 15-30 minutes of one-on-one time with your teenager, 2/3 times per week, can help rebuild and/or make the relationship between you two stronger. Giving your adolescent quality time and asking non-directive questions can help build your relationship and give you the opportunity of open communication.
