When starting therapy with your child, it can be daunting to meet with your child's therapist for the first time. You've come to the therapist for help with whatever is going on with your child, and needing help can be a scary feeling. We believe that while we know a lot about child development and mental health, YOU are the expert on your child, and we want to work together to find solutions that best fit your family's needs. So, what can you expect from your child's therapist at The Kid's Therapy Center?
You can expect to meet with the therapist at the end of every session. This is your time to discuss what has been challenging with parenting and what has been going well. This is also the time for the therapist to give you a general overview on what they are working on with your child, including any coping skills that you can reinforce at home.
You can expect the therapist to explain what methods they are using and why. What is play therapy and why can it be beneficial for your child? How can doing art or using a sandtray help your child move toward their goals? What can we do to help your child process difficult experiences in their lives? Your child's therapist should be able to give reasons for their chosen methods to meet your child's needs.
You can expect the therapist to respect your child's privacy. One of the most important things about therapy is the relationship that is built between the client and the therapist, no matter the age of the client. Relationships are built on trust. While you should be made aware of any safety concerns and of the overall progress and trajectory of your child's therapy, your therapist should also respect the trust that is being built with your child.
You can expect that the therapist may consult with a colleague. Therapists are human, too, and they can't be expected to know everything about every method. The therapist may need to occasionally bounce ideas off a colleague in the clinic, while keeping your child's personal information private.
You can expect the therapist to be human. They won't get it right every time, and they may do or say something that makes you feel frustrated. If this happens, we encourage you to bring this up with the therapist! They can always make an adjustment or a different suggestion. Remember, you are the expert on your child, and the therapist wants to work together with you to make positive change in your family.
Starting therapy for your child is an important step for their emotional and mental health. Knowing what to expect from your child's therapist at The Kid's Therapy Center can help you feel more confident. A good relationship between you, your child, and the therapist is crucial for successful therapy. By working together, you can help make lasting, positive change for your child and your family.
