Lego Based Social Skills Groups at The Kid's Therapy Center

Lego Builds & Social Skills Group

Lead by JJ Bressler, MS, LAPC

In using Lego based therapy for our social skills groups, we are looking to improve overall outcomes of communication, teamwork, confidence, and decision making. We are looking to facilitate a positive environment for children to work together and collaborate on various projects through the art of building Lego. The group aims at helping children understand teamwork by assigning each group member a role with different responsibilities. With each role helping to improve an aspect of social communication. The group is divided into teams of 3 for the assigned project created during the group session.

The Engineer role is the one who oversees reading and keeping track of visual instructions and communicating these instructions to the supplier. Often the instructions are focused on what parts are needed and where the parts need to go.

The supplier then becomes responsible for finding the bricks that are described by the engineer and sharing them with the builder.

The builder is responsible for construction. Using the parts brought by the supplier and the instructions given by the engineer, the builder learns to piece together the project with the given resources. The builder also communicates any changes they may see or any additional pieces they may need while engaging in construction.

In working together to reach a common goal, the group aims at instilling confidence in members when the goal is reached, and with the progress that is made through each step. Each group member has the ability not only to help contribute to the success of others, but to their own success as being an essential part of a winning team. Within each role comes a different aspect of decision making and understanding how the decisions being made affect each member of the group and how to reach a common goal.

Overall, using Lego based therapy for social communication within the group allows the group members to participate in a beloved hands on activity while being a part of a positive and energetic environment that offers a unique approach to social learning, and a great way to create and improve relationships.
